Summary: | Itch or pruritus is an unpleasant sensation on skin that evokes the desire to scratch. Several
factors, such as insects’s bite, exposure to pruritic agents, and allergy could stimulate itchy.
Muntingia calabura L., which in Indonesian known as “daun kersen”has been used
traditionally in Phillipines as an antipruritus. The purpose of this research was to prepare a
cream containing daun kersen extract and evaluate its antipruritic effects. Formula of the
cream was developed by optimizing the stiffening agent (cera alba and cetyl alcohol),
emulsifying agents (tween80-span80, sodium CMC, stearic acid-TEA), and humectant
(propylene glycol). Preparation process a larger amount of the cream was optimized by
reducing the total oil content. Physical stability evaluation was perfomed by freeze-thaw
and centrifugation tests. Antipruritic effect of the cream was evaluated in mice. The
optimal formula of the cream based on physical stability results consisted of daun kersen
extract 15%, cetyl alcohol 8%, combination of tween 80 and span 80 (5.7% : 4.3%) and
propylene glycol 15%. Cream containing 15% methanol extract of Muntingia calabura L.
leaf showed a significant decrease in the total number of scratch in mice following 20
minutes of the application. From this study we can conclude that the best cream formula
consisted of methanol extract of Muntingia calabura L. leaf 15%, extra virgin olive oil
12%, cetyl alcohol 8%, propylene glycol 15%, tween 80 5.7%, span 80 4.3%, vitamin E
0.05%, methyl paraben 0.3%, propyl paraben 0.4%. Muntingia calabura L. leaf cream at
concentration of 15% in mice has an antipruritic effect showed by a decrease in total
number of scratch.
