Description
Summary:Salicylic acid is used in a variety of skin care products for acne, psoriasis, calluses, keratosis pilaris, and warts. Salicylic acid is also used as a preservative and antimicrobial skin care products, with a maximum concentration of 0.5%. This research was aimed to develop a method for determining the levels of salicylic acid which is used as a preservative in cosmetic cream and gel preparations. Salicylic acid was extracted using solvents from the optimization several organic solvents, namely ethanol, methanol, and acetone. Salicylic acid was then reacted with FeCl3 forming an intensely violet coloured complex that has maximum absorbance at 526 nm. Validated analytical method was performed by determination of salicylic acid levels in cosmetic cream and gel preparations. The calibration curve was linear in a range of 20-55 ?g/mL with a correlation coeffitcient (r) of 0,999; coefficient of variance (Vxo) of 1,40%; limit of detection of 1,736 ?g/mL; and limit of quantitation of 5,259 ?g/mL. Accuracy test of salicylic acid standard assay showed recoveries of 98,9-100,2%; 107,4-107,1% for cream preparation; and 97,5-98,3% for gel preparation. Repeatability test of salicylic acid standard assay showed the coefficient variation (CV) of 1,01%; 2,19% for cream preparation; and 2,51% for gel preparation. Intermediate precision test, intraday and interday, resulted in coefficient variation (CV) of 1,80%, 1,01%, 1,39% and 1,01%, 0,92%, 1,53% respectively. Determination of salicylic acid in cosmetic cream and gel preparations using visible spectrophotometry provided a valid method. The levels of salicylic acid in cosmetic cream and gel preparation, as a result of determination provides a range of 0.318-0.457% in cream preparations and 0.323- 0.889% in gel preparations.
