Description
Summary:Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in the world, including in Indonesia. Hypertension is one of the cardiovascular disease risk factor. Based on previous research, hypertension can be induced by using NaCl-prednisone and adrenaline. At the other side, treatment of hypertension by traditional medicine using jamu for decreasing the blood pressure have been widely used in Indonesia. Celery (Apium graveolen) herb and bulb of garlic (Allium sativum) have been widely studied in their antihypertensive effect and in jamu for reducing blood pressure. The research related to the effects and safety of jamu is still limited. This research aimed to examine the antihypertensive effect of jamu X which containing celery (Apium graveolen) herb and jamu Y which containing combination of garlic (Allium sativum) bulb, celery (Apium graveolen) herb, and valerian (Valeriana officinalis) root, and to determine the possible presence of active subtances in jamu X and jamu Y. Jamu X and Y were tested for their antihypertensive effects based on two parameters, were decreasing systolic and diastolic blood pressure in animals which was induced by NaCl and prednisone with captopril as comparator drugs, and inhibition in increasing on systolic dan diastolic blood pressure using adrenaline as inducers with atenolol as comparator drugs. Measurement of systolic and diastolic blood pressure was performed by using direct methods noninvasive tail-cuff. Furthermore that was also conducted diuresis effects observations of jamu X and Y during therapy period. Jamu X and Y was tested for certain active substances were amlodipine, atenolol, furosemide, and captopril using thin layer chromatography. The results showed that jamu X and Y had antihypertensive activity, which was exposed the test group had significantly difference with the control group (p<0,05). Antihypertensive effect of jamu X and Y was lower than the comparator drug. Jamu X and Y had percentage EUV more than 80% at the 24th hour, so it can concluded that jamu X and Y had diuresis effect that occured at the 24th hour. Based on chromatogram result, jamu Y had parallel position with furosemide. Jamu X and Y had antihypertensive effects, based on two parameters that decreasing in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and also inhibition in increasing on systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Based on chromatogram result, jamu Y might contained furosemide.
