These conditions account for most morbidity and mortality among middle-aged and older adults. White frangipani flowers (Plumeria alba L.) have been reported showed hypolipidemic effect through in vitro test. This research purposed to evaluate the antihyperlipidemia effect of white frangipani flowers (Plumeria alba L.) ethanol extract through in vivo test in Wistar rats. The active compound of white frangipani flowers were extracted by maceration method in ethanol 96%. Hypolipidemic effect was tested in hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia rats. Rats were induced hypercholesterolemia by giving per oral of pure cholesterol, high cholesterol diet, and propylthiouracil (PTU) in drinks. Rats were induced hypertriglyceridemia by giving high carbohidrat diet. Hypercholesterolemia or hypertriglyceridemia rats were divided into control group (CMC Na 0.3% suspension), white frangipani flowers extract group (45 and 135 mg/kg), and standard group (simvastatin 1.8 mg/kg) or (gemfibrozil 81 mg/kg). Treatment with test substances were given for 17 days. In antihypercholesterolemia test, ethanol extract of white frangipani flowers at a dose of 45 mg/kg body weight reduce total cholesterol level very significantly (p?0.01) 45.86±6.46 %. In antihypertriglyceridemia test, ethanol extract of white frangipani flowers at doses of 45 and 135 mg/kg body weight reduced triglycerides levels very significantly (p?0.01) i.e. 33.28±4.82 % and 21.76±8.81 %, respectively. Based on the results, ethanol extract of white frangipani flowers at a dose of 45 mg/kg body weight which is equivalent with 15 g white frangipani flowers is able to reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides significantly and able to develop further as antihyperlipidemia. text |
