Description
Summary:One of the main causes of cardiovascular disease is hyperlipidemia which is a condition of increasing amounts of lipids in the blood. Cholesterol is a major component in the atherogenic plaques. Many studies have proved that cholesterol can impair the structure and function of blood vessels by forming a coating on the walls of blood vessels. Therefore, hyperlipidemia become one of the atherosclerosis occurrence risk factor. While total cholesterol is above 200 mg/dl, it is often linked with risk factor of cardiovascular disease development. Thereby, it’s necessary to develop the therapy for cardiovascular disease, it is as anti-hyperlipidemia. This research aims to determine the activity of ethanol extract of red ginger rhizome against the activity of anti-hyperlipidemia and its effect on atherosclerosis plaque in the rat with atherosclerosis model. Atherosclerosis model was formed by inducing high diet of cholesterol into test animals, 100 mg/kg bw of pure cholesterol, 2 mg/kg bw of propylthiouracil, and 0.1% collate acid on Sprague-Dawley male rat. After 7 weeks of induction, test animals are divided into 4 groups i.e.: control group, red ginger extract 100 and 400 mg/kg bw, and simvastatin 25 mg/kg bw. The therapy applied in 2 weeks after induction ends. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL were measured at the beginning of induction, end of induction, and the end of treatment. At the end of the treatment, all the animals test were sacrificed, and then the parts of the aorta were isolated for atherosclerosis plaque identification. Group treated with red ginger extract 100 mg/kg bw decrease the total cholesterol and triglyceride level for 15.83% ± 6.46 and 37.98% ± 54.99, respectively, also increase the HDL level for 7.52% ± 22.43. Group treated with red ginger extract 400 mg/kg bw decrease the total cholesterol and triglyceride level for 25.51% ± 18.22 and 54.54% ± 32.72, and also increase the HDL level for 33.93% ± 42.61. Group treated with simvastatin decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride level for 17.81% ± 12.66 and 49.17% ± 40.37, respectively, and also increase the HDL level for 49.39% ± 48.74, which is the highest among all the treated groups. Red ginger extract 100 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg bw can decrease the wall thickness of blood vessel.
