Summary: | Schizophrenia is a severe disease and often endures through time. Treatment of
schizophrenia needs long-term treatment to be successful. Compliance plays important role
as the key to the successfulness in the therapy process, hence affecting the patient’s quality
of life. Complianc can be achieved through education that could be given in counseling
activity by the health professionels in the hospital. Hence, research on the effect of the
counseling towards the degree of patient’s conformity in consuming drugs and to what
extent does the patient’s therapy successful needs to be done. The purpose of this research
was to compare the degree of patient’s conformity between counseled patients and non-
counseled patients at a psychiatric hospital in West Java, and to evaluate the counseling
effects on the therapeutic efficacy. This research was a cross-sectional study conducted
retrospectively collecting medical records and by interviewing the patients. Data was
gathered through interviews and measuring the conformity of both patient groups by using
MMAS (Morisky Medication Adherence Scale 8-items) questionnaire in pre-test and post-
test. The results showed that the counseled patients had a significant improvement in the
high adherence criteria, on the other hand, the non-counseled patients had a significant
improvement in the medium adherence criteria. The result of statistical analytics which
employed MMAS questionnaire in the pre-test and post-test as the instrument showed
significant difference in the improvement in the level of compliance on the counseled
patients, meanwhile for the non-counseled patients there was no significant improvement
in the level of compliance. The statistics showed that 72.55% of counseled patients had a
significant improvement in therapeutic efficacy, but no significant improvement in non-
counseled patients. There was a significant difference in the level of compliance in
counseled patient group compared with non-counseled patient group. Taken together, study
show that counseling activities have beneficial on the patient’s level of compliance and
therapeutical efficacy.
