Summary:Nowadays smoking habit has become a popular life style which unfortunately linked with health problem, primarily, hypertension as shown in cigarette ads and packages. Smokers some are between 40 to 60 years old smoke regularly as a result of nicotine addiction. This study was investigated the smoking habit in terms of number of cigarette, type of cigarette, the way of smoking, and the duration of inhalation) as one of risk factors of hypertension of men aged 40 years and aboved in one hospital in Bandung while taking into consideration the confounding factors : family history, body weight, exercise, salt intake, and stress. The study design was case control research to investigate the factor inquestion.There were 60 case and 60 control subject. Primary data was taken from direct interview and questionnaire, and secondary data was taken from hospital medical record. The data obtained in this research were analyzed by univariate analyzing. The results of tesis research revealed that factors related with hypertension were the number of cigarette smoked, type of cigarette, and the duration of smoking, and the way of smoking. Result also found that family history,body weight, exercise, salt intake and stress were confounding factors of smoking habit. In a conclusion, smoking habit consisting of number of cigarette,type of cigarette,the way of smoking and the duration of inhalation is one of risk factors of hypertension in men over 40 year of age.
