Summary: | Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of death in the world. One of the risk factor of
cardiovascular disease is hypertension. Based on previous research, hypertension can be
induced by reducing blood flow to the kidneys by ligating the renal artery. Java tea
(Orthosiphon stamineus Benth.) and roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) has been used by the
people in the treatment of hypertension. This study aims to determine the blood pressure
lowering effect of the combination of the ethanol extract of Java tea (Orthosiphon
stamineus Benth.) and roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) in Sprague-Dawley rats who have
renovascular hypertension. This study used Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five
groups, group of the normal animal , the positive control group with hypertension, the
comparison group furosemide 6mg / kg BB, group of combination extract dose I
(respectively 250 mg / kg BB), and group of combination extract dose II (respectively 125
mg/ kgBB). The effectivity of the combination of extract was measured by two parameters,
systolic and dyastolic blood preassure. Hypertension induction was done invasively by
using Goldblatt methods with two kidneys and one clip for ligating one of the renal
arteries. Measurement of systolic and diastolic blood pressure was done once every week
for 7 to 8 weeks by using direct noninvasive tail-cuff CODA
®
Instrument. Diuretic test
performed on test animals before inducing hypertension and after therapy. Combination of
ethanol extract of java tea and roselle dose I (each 250 mg / kg BB) and dose II
(respectively 125 mg / kg BB) showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure occurred on
12
th
day of therapy and the diastolic blood pressure decrease on 10
th
of therapy.
Combination of ethanol extract of java tea and roselle dose I (respectively 250 mg / kg
body weigh) and dose II (respectively 125 mg / kg body weight) can decrease of blood
pressure induced renovascular hypertension. Comparison of the results of testing the
effects of induced diuresis before and after treatment showed that the entire group of
animals who have renovascular hypertension decreased urination, so the value of % EUV
<80% at first hours until the sixth hour after administration of test substance
