The Effect of Ethanol Extract of Ambon Lumut Banana [Musa (AAA group, Cavendish subgroup)] Fruits to Anti-ulcer Activity of Ranitidine Against Asetosal-Induced Ulcer in Rats
Peptic ulcer is a serious gastrointestinal disorder that happened from imbalance between defensive factors such as mucus secretions and prostaglandin productions, and aggresive factors, such as acid secretions, leading to stomach bleeding even perforation. It also can happen due to the high use of NSAIDs, such as asetosal. Ambon lumut banana is a fruit that is widely consumed by the Indonesian people. Banana fruit is used as a daily intake of fruits, but ambon lumut bananas are also often used as an alternative companion in drug consumption for whose have difficulty to consumpt the drug using mineral water. The previous researches revealed that unripe banana fruits had an antiulcer activity. Clinically, consumption of the drugs, include anti-ulcer drugs, often accompanied by eating ambon lumut banana fruits. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of Musa (AAA group, Cavendish subgroup) to anti-ulcer activity of ranitidine against asetosal-induced ulcer in rats. Anti-ulcer activity was assessed by Ulcer Index (UI) method. Asetosal 405 mg/kg bw was given orally for 7 days as an ulcer inducer. Each fruits extract was combined with ranitidine 27 mg/kg bw which was given orally, with the dose of 50 mg/kg bw, 100 mg/kg bw, and 200 mg/kg bw 7 days later. After 14 days, the rats were sacrificed and their stomach were quickly removed for further observation. Banana fruits extract 100 mg/kg bw and ranitidine 27 mg/kg bw used as references group. The ulcer-control group showed a high score in UI and significant different with negative-control group (p<0.05). The ranitidine 27 mg/kg bw-reference group had a low score in UI and significantly different with ulcer-control group (p<0.05). The banana fruits extract 100 mg/kg bw-reference group had a higher score in UI and not significantly different with the ulcer-control group. Banana fruits extract 50 mg/kg bw and 100 mg/kg bw had a higher score in UI and not significantly different with ulcer-control group. The banana fruits extract 200 mg/kg bw had a little better UI score but not significantly different with ulcercontrol group. The ethanol extract of ambon lumut banana fruits had an influence to decrease anti-ulcer activity of ranitidine which was showed by higher UI score in experimental group. text |
