ADSORPTION OF METHYLENE BLUE FROM TEXTILE WASTE BY A BATCH METHOD USING ZALACCA SEEDS MODIFIED BY EPICHLOROHYDRIN
Dyeing effluent is one of major problems of industrial wastes. Methylene blue (MB) is a dye which is difficult to be dgraded naturally because of its heterocyclic aromatic stmcture. In this study, activated carbon and activated carbon modified by Epichlorohydrin wi II be prepared for adsorption of m...

Methylene blue (MB) is a dye which is difficult to be dgraded naturally because of its heterocyclic aromatic stmcture. In this study, activated carbon and activated carbon modified by Epichlorohydrin wi II be prepared for adsorption of methylene blue fi-om aqueous solution . The seeds of Zalacca will be used as the raw materials of both adsorbents. The results of the experiment showed that optimum modification of Zalacca seed and epichlorohydrin of l :2 (w/w) in 5 hours and activated by sulphuric acid of 1 :4 (w/w) in 5 hours at 50°C. The prepared both adsorbents will be characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (ITIR), X-Ray Difraction (XRD), Particle Size Analyzer ( PSA ) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Then, the adsorption experiments will be investigated with some parameters of adsorption such as contact time, initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dossage and temperature in a Batch system. Two models of adsorption isotherm, which are Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm, were investigated to describe the term when the adsorption proccess reach the equilibrium state. Kinetic models used to interpret adsorption data were pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The result ofMB adsorption by modified-activated Zalacca seed testing showed that optimum adsorption was reached at pH 11 ; MB concentration of 400 ppm, equilibrium state was reached at 45 minutes of contact time, and with 15 mg adsorhents. The results of the kinetic study showed that the adsorption of MB by the adsorbent could be described by pseudo-second order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameter data indicated that adsorption process of the adosrbent was not spontaneous with the Gibbs free energy (ilG) values are -5.041 kJ/mole at 25 oc and descreased to -5.379 kJ/mole at 45 °C and -5.718 kJ /mol at 65 oc. Adsorption process occuned endotermically with emhalpy (ilH) value of 2.107 J /mole. In accordance to the results, the value of entropy (ilS) obtained was 16.911 J /mole.K . text |
