Summary: | The bodybuilding-supplement consumption pattern among active member of fitness centers was
established through observational study of random subjects who were active members of a fitness center.
Furthermore, their knowledge of the supplement were measured and compared to those of 4
th
year
Pharmacy students from BIT. Also, supplements which are popular among bodybuilders are then tested
for steroids using Liebermann-Burchard method. The study was done in 2 fitness centers in Bandung
(PKA and PKB) with each center providing 100 subjects who were chosen randomly and without any
restriction. They were given questionnaire describing their identity, habit in consuming supplement and
knowledge that of the supplement. The fitness center were divided into medium-high class fitness center
(PKA) and lower class fitness center (PKB). Particularly for the supplement knowledge comparison, there
were 100 random subjects chosen from 4
th
year pharmacy student of Bandung Institute of Technology as
comparison. The level of knowledge were measured by accumulating points from each category. Above
the average knowledge were described from accumulating more than 1 points. Information regarding
supplements that are popular among bodybuilder are then use to acquire the appropriate supplements for
testing. The test included determination of LOD and steroids in sample by dissolving samples in
chloroform. The chloroform solutions were then added with acetic acid anhydride : sulfuric acid (1:1)
solution. Positive result were shown by the formation of red to orange ring between two phase of solution.
From the study, there was as much as 56% (PKA) and 51% (PKB) subjects who consumed bodybuildingsupplement on a regular basis. A total of 49 out of 56 subjects were in the range of 17 to 45 years of age
(PKA). While it was 48 out of 51 subjects in the range of 17 to 35 years of age at PKB. Most of the
subjects consuming supplement were either private employees (17 in PKA; 10 in PKB), entrepreneurs (20
in PKA), or college students (12 in PKA; 35 in PKB). At PKA, 40 out of 56 subjects has been a member
since at least 3 years ago. While in PKB, it was distributed rather evenly throughout from 3 months, 1, 2
and/or 3 years ago. Cumulatively, it was also observed most subjects consuming supplement were
regularly exercising 4-5 times a week in PKA (33) and PKB (21). Although in PKB, most subjects were
regularly exercising 1-3 times a week (30). From the study, it was obtained that PKA subjects (41.07%)
has a higher percentage of subjects with above the average knowledge in comparison to the pharmacy
students (34%). But statistic result showed there are no significant difference at p>0.05 (3.841) between
the knowledge of PKA members and the pharmacy students (0.976). While subjects obtained from PKB
(9.80%) had a lower percentage of above the average knowledge compared to the pharmacy students
(34%). This is supported by the fact that statistic result showed a significant difference at p >0.05 (3.841)
between the knowledge of PKB members using supplement and the pharmacy students(29.325). The
qualitative analysis of the supplements showed positive results in 3 of the 9 samples tested. 1 of the 3
samples were steroid tablet. While the other 2 were claimed to be pure whey protein milk in the form of
powder milk. Bodybuilding-supplement was popular among fitness center active members who were
between 17 to 35 years old at PKB and 17-45 years at PKA. Also, they were either private employees or

college students at PKA and PKB. There were also entrepreneur at PKA. The trend was also shown in
active members who were exercising 4-5 times a week at PKA and 1-3 times a week at PKB. As for the
level of knowledge, there were no difference of knowledge in the middle-high class fitness center (PKA)
active members in comparison to the pharmacy students’. Lower class fitness center (PKB) active
members were shown to have a lower level of knowledge of the supplement compared to the pharmacy
students’.
