At previous study, the microparticles of eggshell could increase the SPF value
which was tested to rabbit skin. However, since the microparticles remains
relatively as coarse particles, it could give the uncomfortable use at human skin,
not provide the optimum effect, and cause low irritation.
The objective of this research were to optimize preparation of eggshell
nanoparticles with coupling formulation parameter and process parameter by
experimental design method and to characterize its properties.
Size reductions of eggshell were firstly generated by wet milling to obtain
eggshell microparticles, and followed by sonication to obtain nanocrystal. Two
level factorial design was employed with independent variable as well as
stabilizer type (Tween 80 and polyvinyl alcohol), concentration of microparticles
eggshell suspension (5% and 10%), and duration of sonication process (60
minutes and 180 minutes); and as response as well as particle size,
polydispersity index, and zeta potential.
The results showed that type of stabilizer influenced particle size in which Tween
80 was more effective to reduce the particle size than polyvinyl alcohol. While,
the concentration of suspension eggshell microparticles (in range 5% to 10%)
and period process (in range 60 minutes to 180 minutes) did not give significant
influence to particle size. As addition, particle size of nanosuspensions were
stable for 3 month.
