At that time, the Dutch East Indies was used as experimental laboratories to support the emergence of new architecture, so this demanded more efforts by architects to innovate the art of a building at the time. This process was later known as the Indo-European architecture. Indo-European architecture was pioneered by Maclaine Pont and Thomas Karsten who agreed that Indo-European architecture should be sensitive to the art of traditional Nusantara building. However, in contrast to Pont and Karsten's opinion, Wolff Schoemaker assumed that European architecture did not need a locality in it. This contrasting thought of Wolff Schoemaker was interesting to discuss, besides he was also a very productive architect in the city of Bandung in that periode This study aims to express the conceptual thinking of C. P. Wolff Schoemaker about religious buildings that respond to the concepts of Indo-European architecture and religious architecture through the three buildings he designed, namely the St. Peter Cathedral (Catholic), Bethel Church (Protestant) and Cipaganti Mosque (Islam). Religious buildings are chosen because in the realm of architecture, this function is classified as a difficult assignment because it must reflect the beliefs of followers in the interior and exterior of the building, as well as describe the underlying religious philosophy. To achieve this goal, this research was conducted through four stages, namely, data collection, verification, analysis and synthesis, also historical writing. The results of this study revealed that Wolff Schoemaker's creative process in realizing his religious building is based on pragmatic paradigm by emphasizing the practicality and usefulness, compared to the values held by the people in it. text |
