Summary: | ABC Street is included in Bandung Cultural Heritage List and considered as priority area according to Regional Regulation (RDTR Cibeunying 2015). In a wider scale, ABC Street is considered strategic and significant because it is located near Bandung’s landmark, namely Pasar Baru, Alun-Alun and Braga Street. Despite having this potential, the current condition of ABC Street does not represent its significant value as a cultural heritage of Bandung. ABC Street as a commercial corridor is considered not comfortable for pedestrians because it is still dominated by vehicles and street vendors. The visual appearance of the corridor does not represent the appropriate image of the cultural heritage because the heritage buildings are not well-maintained and the building façades are covered by commercial advertisements. ABC Street is only active during the day and turns to a lifeless and passive. This condition is in contrast with the character of commercial corridor as a public space. It should provide accessibility, comfort for pedestrian, attraction and activities that can liven up the area. The purpose of this study is to create a design concept for ABC street and develop a design simulation. The method used in this design process is synoptic method (Shirvani, 1985), a rational design method with systematic design steps. The design strategy to overcome the main problems in the corridor is the utilization of the inner block area on ABC Street. It aims to accommodate communal parking and street vendors. ABC Street is arranged in shared street concept to improve pedestrian comfort and support accessibility. Actions taken to increase the overall image cultural heritage image are conservation of heritage buildings and streetscape conservation by maintaining the building intensity, facade and signage. Mixed-used building functions and different activity programs during the day and night are implemented to make the street more lively and vibrant. |
