The phenomenon where independent learning process can be done by watching video lectures at home, public transportation, cafes, or in parks, is referred as the concept of flipped classroom or informal learning space (ILS). In the context of Bandung City, the phenomenon was further elaborated into that a shift in the use of cafes from public as a place to do assignments, work, and reading. This shows that the cafe has been transformed functionally as a new informal study room. This study will discuss the location and characteristics of cafes and/or coworking spaces located around Jalan Dago and Dipati Ukur which are selected by students as informal learning spaces (ILS) through surveys and observations. This study is expected to explain the characteristics of cafes and/or coworking space around the campus environment as informal learning spaces, student responses during informal learning. The identified relationship between user’s motive, physical characteristics, social characteristic of public cafes, and student responses could also be used as a reference for designing a cafe near the higher education complex which specify college students as their target. Research found 6 factors which motivate students to use café as an informal learning space, composed of 5 hedonistic motives and 1 utilitarian motive; 7 factors of café characteristics, composed of 4 physical factors and 3 social factors; and a positive relationship between utilitarian motivation and café’s amenity towards student’s cognitive & affective response. The findings strongly implied university could design better learning amenities to accommodate student’s need, so the process of informal learning could become more comfortable, henceforth raising their performance. Research also proposed a structural equation model (SEM) as a reccomendation for further research development in the learning space’s body of knowledge. text
