Summary:<b></i>Abstract :</b><i> <p align=\"justify\"><br /> Dasa Ganesha Bank, a state owned bank, previously known as the Bureau Herstel Financiering, was founded in 1948. In 1951 and 1960, its status was changed into the state owned industrial bank and the development bank subsegwently. <br /> <br /> The change of status is due to a change of mission imposed by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia which is the seek shave holder of the Bank. The purpose is to anticipate the growing demand of its services because of economic growth in the near future. <br /> <br /> Due to the Banking Ordinance of 1992, the status of Dasa Ganesha Bank has changed from a development bank into a commercial bank. Consequently, its mission and operation have also changed. Before imposing the 1992 Banking Law, Dasa Ganesha Bank had limited services as a commercial bank. The bank, then, extended its function by trading foreign exchange restricted to its own debtors in June 1, 1983, When Banking Deregulation was introduced by the Government. <br /> <br /> Since, as a development bank, the bank has many experiences in financing medium and long term loans, it has strong points ompared to other commercial banks. However, at present, the bank faces serious problems due to a big amount of bed debt. The ever changing missions and form of the company may have caused a problem in setting up a business culture and strategy needed by a growing company. <br /> <br /> The combination of the form of a commercial bank and its lending experiences should be followed up by the adjustment of its mission,vision,value identity and dimension of the organization. The bank developed innovations and arrangements of defensive business strategy that build up its competitive power. Therefore, the bank can deal with the difficulties faced and competed with other banks in the free trade era characterized by rapid information and tight competition. <br /> <br /> The Defensive Business Strategy will always be evaluated periodically to ensure that the bank can obtain the benefit of knowledge about the changing working environment and business demands. The arrangement of the strategy consists of the establishment of the Focus of Corporate Strategy determined by the board of directors, the Internal Analysis in order to know the real strengths and weaknesses, and the Analysis of the external environment. <br /> <br /> The arrangement uses the TOWS matrix, Generic Competition Strategy, Portfolio Planning and Value Chain, and the concept of building future strategy. By implementing the alternative defensive business strategy, the bank can formulate a short cut to achieve its objectives with considering market condition and environmental dynamics. Therefore, Dasa Ganesha Bank is able to deal with the present difficulties and develop itself much further.
