To increase their performance, many firms adopted new technology, but they didn\'t pay much attention to management. The concequence is, the firms didn\'t get the maximum benefit from the new technology. <br /> One of management problem described here is the correlation between technology, work and worker, and its implication to work design. <br /> Information technology is viewed from two dimension, automated and manual technology. Work and worker is viewed in terms of competencies, included motive, trait, self-concept, knowledge and skill. The measurements include: <br /> • How the work competency requirements are. <br /> • How the worker competencies are. <br /> • The concequences occured because of differences between work competency requirements and worker competencies. <br /> Case study was conducted in PT X, a toll collector and service firm, to toll collector workers. Findings: <br /> There are differences between automated technology environment and manual technology environment, in terms of the work competency requirement. <br /> There are differences between automated technology environment and manual technology environment, in terms of the worker competencies. The worker competencies are bigger than the work competency requirement in both technology environment. This will lead to: <br /> • Workers underutilization <br /> • Workers get bored easily <br /> • Automation change worker qualifications, from specific needs to generic needs. <br /> • Work design concept is changed, from technology-based work design to human-based design to achieve human-machine sinergy. text |
