Summary: | Incineration is one of many waste handling technology which are used by popular countries in the world. Thermodynamics Laboratory ITB has a small incinerator to handle Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). This incinerator was used to burn Bandung Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) into ash. To get the combustion result, simulation was used to approach the real result of the Bandung MSW combustion by using Flic and Fluent.
Flic was used to have the gas profile from Bandung MSW combustion at the bed of the furnace, such as temperature, velocity, pressure, and mass fraction with the input was MSW composition, grate speed, and incinerator length and width. Fluent was used to have the inner condition of incinerator with the input was the gas profile from Flic simulation. Throughout the simulation, the main parameters to be observed were excess air and outlet position againts the mass burn rate, temperature distribution, and exhaust emission.
The results from combustion simulation using Flic and Fluent showed the influence of changing outlet geometry and excess air on emission, mass loss rate, and temperature distribution in small incinerator. As a result, the small incinerator with excess air as much as 25 percent and the outlet of incinerator is at the end of the furnace came up as the best choice. This incinerator had CO gas emission 125,98 mg/Nm3, which is passed the CO gas emission requirement for incineration from Indonesian government in Ministry of Environtment and Foresty regulation number 70 in 2016 about Baku Mutu Emisi Usaha dan/atau Kegiatan Pengolahan Sampah Secara Termal, which is maximum 600 mg/Nm3.
