Lesson Learned From Four Business Incubators : The Technology Based Cases

The rise of entrepreneurship in Indonesia is increasing. In 2018, entrepreneur ratio compared to total population is 3.1% compared to 1.65% in 2014. However, this was below government target in the number of 5%. In addition, Based on Global Entrepreneurship Development Index, Indonesia is ranked in 97th and far below another ASEAN country. The reason is low survival rate of the entrepreneurs in Indonesia. This condition created a concern for the entrepreneur ecosystem itself. To nurture entrepreneur, panorama of business development support is emerged. There are three type of business development support program. One of them is Business Incubator. With the emerging of various startups in Indonesia, Business Incubators have been established. However, report stated only 45% of Business Incubator in Indonesia that have fit model and process. The reason why other business incubator is falling apart is because the lack of successful or quality startup that has been nurtured in those business incubator. The causes are; lack of entry selection for the startup, lack of proper incubation process and lack of industrial involvement between tenant, incubator and industry players. This study is purposed to find the critical success factor from the established business incubator. Specifically, the scope of this paper is to study technology based incubator in order to face the industrial 4.0 challenge. The method used through qualitative method to find success factor in related to the selection, incubation process and involvement toward the industry. Based on the four technology based business Incubator, tenant selection in term of validating idea and entrepreneurial are important. Furthermore, Incubation Process will work properly when the entry selection has been assessed carefully. Thus, Based on the tenant selection and the incubation process, business incubator can create a quality startup. Based on the analysis of four Business Incubators which have adopted technology process. The Incubator 2 provided 38 success factors compared to the 45 Ideal success factors.
