Description
Summary:Binahong [Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) v. Steenis] leaves has several effects including antiinflammation, antipeptic ulcer, antidiabetic, and hepatoprotective in tradisional medecine. Evaluation of the safety of ethanol extract of binahong leaves was done in experimental animal. Ethanolic extract of binahong leaves was classified as not toxic because of its LD50 > 15 g/kg of body weight in mice orally. The purpose of this research is to study and assess sub chronic toxicity effects of ethanolic extract of binahong leaves in Wistar rats. Sub chronic toxicity study was evaluated in male and female Wistar rats by administration ethanolic extract of binahong leaves at doses of 100 mg/kg b.w, 400 mg/kg b.w, and 1000 mg/kg b.w daily for 90 days. During the study, behavior, mortality, and body weight of rats were observed. At the end of study period, characteristics of urine, relative organ weight, hematology, blood biochemistry, and histopathology were observed. Ethanol extract of binahong leaves up to dose of 1000 mg/kg b.w had not caused mortality and behavioral changes. There were no significant difference in body weight, urinary parameters, relative organ weight, hematology, blood biochemistry in rats treated by ethanolic extract of binahong leaves compared with controls group (p > 0.05). Observations histology showed that heart, lung, liver, kidney, and spleen had no differences with the control group. Repeated administration of ethanol extract of binahong leaves up to a dose of 1000 mg/kg b.w showed no toxic signs or abnormalities, therefore binahong leaves extract was safe for long term treatment.
