Description
Summary:Background and aim : The incidence of obesity is increasing and becoming epidemic in some developed countries and developing countries. Ethnic differences in a country have a tendency to show a different of character for selection of food intake, and frequency of eating. In developed countries tend to consume high fat foods and in some developing countries consume high carbohydrate foods as a main meal. Senna leaf ( Senna alexandrina ) empirically used as a laxative, loss of appetite and weight loss. The aim of this study is to search antiobesity effects of senna leaf ethanol extract on animal models of high carbohydrate diet induced. Methods : antiobesity test performed in vivo assay toward Wistar rats for 30 days, they were divided four groups. The study observed parameters such as daily body weight, daily food intake index, urine volume, weight and quality of feces, organ index, perirenal fat index, perianal fat index, Lee’s index, cholesterol level, triglyceride level and insulin resistance. Results : Senna leaf ethanol extract could decreased body weight, increased urine volume, prevented insulin resistance, decreased cholesterol level and triglyceride level, decreased fat body accumulation, and had low Lee’s index. Senna leaf ethanol extract at a dose of 50 mg/kg bw and 100 mg/kg bw could increased urine volume, prevented insulin resistance, decreased cholesterol level significantly (p<0,05). Senna leaf ethanol extract at a dose of 50 mg/kg bw could decreased fat body accumulation, and had low Lee’s index. Senna leaf ethanol extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg bw decreased body weight, and triglyceride level significantly (p<0,05). Conclusion : Senna leaf ethanol extract at a dose of 100 mg/kg bw has potency as antiobesity agent by decrease body weight, cholesterol level, triglyceride level, fat body accumulation, prevent insulin resistance, low Lee’s index and increase urine volume.
