Bite for data is essential for evaluating performance of prosthetics, tooth treatment,
therapy, jaw abnormalities, and injury in mastication system. In Indonesia, study about
maximum bite force has never been done in large subject quantity, one of the reasons is bite
force recording device is hard to find. The Mechanical Engineering Program of Institut
Teknologi Bandung and Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Padjajaran have made a bite
force measuring instrument but improvements are needed for the instrument. Because of the
causes mentioned before, design revision, manufacturing, and testing is needed for human
bite force instrument.
The design process starts with reviewing the existing bite force measuring instrument,
followed by defining design requirements and objectives, generating and selecting concept,
manufacturing, calibration, testing, and instrument evaluation and documentation. The final
design of the instrument uses Flexiforce as the sensor which is put Between two bite
impression as the bite platform. Up to 4 sensors that are connected to op-amp and low pass
filter can be used at the same time. The data acquisition is based on Arduino system.
The bite force measuring instrument has been successfully designed and manufactured
using bite impression material for the bite platform, FlexiForce as the sensor, Arduino UNO
based data acquisition, and scotch double-sided tape for the adhesive. The instrument’s sensor
1, 2, and 4 has been successfully calibrated and tested in laboratory scale with maximum error
of 11.52%. The instrument fulfilled almost all must criteria and several wish criteria specified
on design requirements and objectives.
