Description
Summary:Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is widely used in various fields, including construction, automobile manufacturing, medical equipment, and electronics. The advantages of PVC are flexible/rigid, durable, and cost-effective. However, is easily degraded due to heat, even at temperatures around 70?. Therefore, adding additives in the form of PVC thermal stabilizers is needed. One of the most environmentally friendly and popular thermal stabilizer for PVC is mix metal stabilizer. The mix metal stabilizer is made from carboxylate acids and alkaline mixtures of alkaline earth metals and transition metals. Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) is a local raw material that has the potential to be used as a source of carboxylate acid for the production of mix metal stabilizers. The mixture of metals used is Ca and Zn because this type of metal are nontoxic. This study aims to prepare a mix metal stabilizers Ca/Zn from PFAD, to find the most effective Ca/Zn ratio and dose (phr), and to test the effectiveness of adding costabilizers. The mixed metal thermal stabilizer synthesized from PFAD, in this study is called Ca/Zn palmat. IR spectra showed that Ca/Zn carboxylate groups can be formed from PFAD. The congo test and the dehydrochlorination test showed the best PVC stability time at a 4:1 ratio. The most optimal dose (phr) at the ratio of 4:1 is 7 phr. The addition of pentaerythritol as a co-stabilizer has a synergistic effect on PVC thermal stabilizers. The roll mill test demonstrates PVC thermal stabilizers Ca/Zn palmat fulfills extrusion requirements for 15 minutes without being sticky.
