Description
Summary:Indonesia is geologically positioned on the boundary of Eurasia continental plate, Indo-Australia oceanic plate, and Pasific oceanic plate. Such condition nurtures the formation of a ring of fire which comes along with teutonic and volcanic activities. Tsunami is among the highest ranking natural disaster resulting from the activities, and in the past few decades there have been 22 separate instances recorded in the region (BNPB, 2016). To mitigate this risk, public preparedness is vital for disaster management and loss minimization. One of the most vulnerable region in Indonesia is Lampung Province which lies on the shoreline of Sunda Strait. Lampung’s Urban Land Use Plan (RTRW) mentions this vulnerability to tsunami and high tide especially along the shores, including Panjang District. This study aims to measure the public preparedness with emphasis on the households along the shores of Panjang district and attempts to identify correlation(s) between the respondents' social characteristics to preparedness indicators. This study is done in Panjang Selatan Village and Karang Maritim Village with 100 data points taken from Slovin formula. This study collects primary data via questionnaire with preparedness indicators adapted from household preparedness framework outlined in "Public Preparedness Study in Anticipation of Earthquake and Tsunami" developed by LIPI-UNESCO/ISDR. The resulting analysis shows that the households along the Panjang district shores are not yet ready for tsunami by public preparedness standard. It also identifies correlation between gender and education level to knowledge and attitude to face tsunami.
