Description
Summary:Background and Objectives: Hockey 5’s is the new format of Hockey, there has not been a study that describe physiological characteristics of Hockey 5’s player during a match, yet. A good understanding of physiological characteristics can help a Hockey coach to create more appropriate training program in order to prepare athletes for competing in a match. The purpose of this study is to determine the average heart rate (HR), velocity, distance coverage, and energy expenditure of Hockey 5’s players throughout a match. Methods: Twelve women (age: 21,25 ± 2,53 year; height: 157,17±7,08 cm; weight: 55,14 ± 4,87 kg) and 14 men (age: 20,00 ± 1,36 year; height: 167,86 ± 7,32 cm; weight: 58,01 ± 1,53 kg) of university Hockey player with an average of 3 years playing experience, were voluntarily participated in this study. Polar RC3 GPS was used to measure heart rate, energy expenditure, running speed, and distance coverage. Result: The duration of match for female player was 938,75 ± 51,69 second, meanwhile for male player was 916,14 ± 44,00 second. The average heart rate of female player was 183 ± 8 bpm and 181 ± 4 bpm for male player. The average distance coverage of female player during one match was 1088,35 ± 108,64 meter and for male player was 1273,52 ± 105,67 meter. The average energy expenditure was 312,42 ± 41,96 kcal for female player and 303,43 ± 36,65 kcal for male player. Conclusions: The heart rate of Hockey 5’players, both for female and male player, had increased at each round. Whereas, the running speed and the distance coverage had decreased. Energy expenditure of Hockey 5’s players were increasing at each round and directly proportional to the increase in the heart rate. This result shows that Hockey 5’s is a high intensity exercise, heavily taxing the aerobic and anaerobic pathways.
