A teratogenic effect of \"pinang\" (Areca catechu L. Palmae) fruit infusion administered in rat orally at doses of 211, 422, 844 mg/kg body weight has been studied on implantation, organogenesis, and fetal periods. On the implantation period the three doses caused miscarriage significantly, while on the organogenesis period no significant abnormality, but slower bone formation of extremities was observed. On the fetal period and on the offspring until the age of six weeks only decrease of body weight occurred. The water extract of \"pinang\" fruit is an abortivum but not a teratogen. |
