THE UTILIZATION OF OCCULAR ANDBEHAVIORINDICATORS FOR MENTAL WORKLOAD AND SLEEPINESS EVALUATION OF STUDENT PILOTS: ASTUDY AT FLIGHT SIMULATOR
Based on data from National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), the crash of training aircraft belonging to flight schools (PSC 141) in Indonesia are fairly high. As many as 64% of accidents caused by human factors. However, the research that discusses human factors, especially in flight schools...

As many as 64% of accidents caused by human factors. However, the research that discusses human factors, especially in flight schools is still measly. In order to improve it, KNKT recommend to increase the knowledge and skills of the student pilots during training. In practice, training can be done anytime, especially in the afternoon. The training used flight simulators as an effective and safe training instrument. To get an effective training, it is need to be further studiedabout the mental workload faced by student pilots. In addition, sleepiness experienced during training becomes another factor that can inhibit this effectiveness. Many methods could be measure mental workload and sleepiness. However, the effective measurement methods that do not interfere the training need to be further studied. The ocular and behavior indicators video-based, such as Eye Blink Rate (EBR), Eye Blink Duration (EBD), and Observer Rated Sleepiness (ORS) are suspectedbecome the solution to these problems. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate ocular and behaviorindicators video-based as a method that can measure the mental workload and sleepiness of studentpilotsduring training. In addition, to find out the mental workload profile and sleepiness based on flight tasks and sessions. Next to determine the relationship between parameters and the influence of profile factors, namely Flight Hours (FH) and Sleep Duration (SD).The result is that EBR and EBD were not significant in each flight task group and session, except ORS. EBR - EBD has a medium, significant and unidirectional relationship. EBR - ORS and EBD - ORS, the relationship is very weak and weak, not significant, and unidirectional. FH and SD affected the diversity (variation) values of EBR, EBD, and ORSvery low. Thus, ocular and behaviorindicators video-based are the effective methods of measuring mental workload and sleepiness and do not interfere the training of studentpilots. text |
