Summary: | A management system is an organization’s way of managing interrelated business parts to achieve its objectives such as product or service quality, operational efficiency, energy efficiency, environmental performance, occupational health, and safety as well as other goals. In June 2011, ISO published a new standard, namely ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System, intending to assist organization in improving energy performance, including energy efficiency, use, and consumption. PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (Pupuk Kaltim) is a state-owned company engaged in petrochemicals with products such as ammonia, urea fertilizer, NPK fertilizer, and utilities has succeeded in becoming the first fertilizer plant in South East Asia that implements ISO 50001:2011 in 2017. Pupuk Kaltim is encouraged to apply ISO 50001:2011 to reduce production costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Previously, Pupuk Kaltim has also implements other standards such as ISO 14001:2015, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, ISO 17025:2017.
In August 2018, ISO issued ISO 50001:2018 to update ISO 50001:2011. The main objectives were to adapt the standards to High-Level Structure so that they could be more easily integrated with other ISO standards and to ensure that the core concepts related to energy management were maintained from the version 2011. The transition period given in three years. As a company that has implemented ISO 50001:2011, Pupuk Kaltim will make the transition to version 2018 before the due date in August 2021. This research aims to identify gaps between the requirements of ISO 50001:2018 and the current implementation in Pupuk Kaltim and propose a series of action plans to make the transition. Research methodologies used are identification of issue, setting research objectives, conducting a literature review, collecting data, identifying changes from the 2011 to 2018 versions in each section, analyzing the 2018 version gaps with the current implementation, and formulating solutions and implementation plans.
The proposed solution from this research is fifteen action plans to be implemented by Pupuk Kaltim to close the identified gaps and to meet all the requirements in ISO 50001:2018. The action plans are grouped according Plan-Do-Check-Action cycle adopted by ISO as the basis for consideration in preparing the implementation time frame. The results of the research showed that Pupuk Kaltim could make a transition in fourteen months. The implementation of proposed action plan starts in January 2020 and will completed in February 2021, which means that Pupuk Kaltim can successfully transition ISO 50001:2018 before the due date.
