FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COMPOSITE BASED ON PINEAPPLE LEAF FIBRE AND EPOXY-RESIN AS SOUND ABSORBING PANEL MATERIAL

Rapid development of industrial technology produces noise, which comes from industrial processes and products, such as vehicle. Noise becomes one type of pollutant which may cause uncomfortability when people doing their daily activities. One alternative method to solve this problem is using sound a...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/46839 Rapid development of industrial technology produces noise, which comes from industrial processes and products, such as vehicle. Noise becomes one type of pollutant which may cause uncomfortability when people doing their daily activities. One alternative method to solve this problem is using sound absorbing materials. On the other side, nowadays people around the world facing environmental issues and fight for better and healthier environment. Development of composites based on natural organic fiber for sound absorbing material might be an alternative solution to overcome noise and environmental issue. In this study, the composites were made using pineapple leaf fibre as filler and epoxy resin as matrix. The hot press method were used to prepare the fiber-epoxy composite, followed by heating for conditioning. Characterization on the prepared composites includes sound absorption ability, thermal, morphological and mechanical (tensile) properties. Sound absorption test had been done in Adhiwijogo Laboratory, Faculty of Industrial Technology, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). It was found that the sound absorption coefficient (?) of the composites are larger than 0.5 in some frequency ranges. Tensile test had been done in Textile Testing Laboratory, Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Tekstil. The young modulus (????) of the composites are within the range of 1.16 × 108 to 1.8 × 108 N/m2. Thermal and morphological properties were characterized using TG/DTA and SEM at Research Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, ITB. text
