Summary: | Climate change adaptation is the ability of a society or natural systems to respond to
changes in life-supporting conditions, including extreme weather. Climate change
adaptation requires adaptative capacity and strategies so that people can respond to
the pressure to achieve sustainable livelihoods. However, most previous studies have
focused more on identifying the adaptation capacity which is used for predicting and
selecting appropriate adaptive strategies against climate change. In fact, choosing
and determining an adaptation strategy is complex issue, because of the socioeconomic dynamics of the community. Therefore, this paper aims to asses community
adaptive capacity through the adaptation strategy that these communities used, i.e.,
diversified livelihoods, based on empirical evidence on the conditions of coastal
communities. Indramayu Regency is one of the regencies in Indonesia that are most
affected by climate change, including Karangsong Village. The coastal community of
Karangsong Village has diversified their livelihoods in the fisheries sector as net
weavers and in the non-fisheries sector through trade. The research aims to identify
the adaptive capacity of coastal communities to climate change through livelihood
diversification in Karangsong Village. The adaptive capacity of coastal communities
will be viewed from the adaptation process based on adaptation typologies, which is
assessed from the form, agent/dimension, purpose, and timing of adaptation. The
factors that influence the adaptation process are human capital, financial capital, and
other capitals (e.g., social capital and infrastructure capital), and the impact of
adaptation through livelihood diversification on the economic conditions of coastal
communities. This research uses a descriptive approach with a mixed-methods, i.e.,
quantitative and qualitative. The study uncovered that the community in the
Karangsong Village has the adaptive capacity to deal with its vulnerabilities through
a strategy of livelihood diversification. This is evident from the adaptation process,
from the factors that stimulate adaptation, as well as the increase in income due to the
diversification of livelihoods. |
