In normal mice, ethanol-insoluble aqueous extract fraction (0.7 g/kg body weight) showed the most potent effect three hours after oral administration, lowering average blood glucose concentration to 59.6 mg/dl from initial value of 109.4 mg/di (45.5% reduction). At this time, blood glucose concentration in the treated mice was significantly different from that of control (p < 0.05), and the effect of the fraction was more potent than that of tolbutamide, which lowered average blood glucose concentration from 110.7 to 74.2 mg/dl (33% reduction). At the same time and after administration of the same dose, initial aqueous extract lowered average blood glucose concentration from 95.6 to 93.1 mg/dl (2.6% reduction), n-hexane fraction lowered from 122.4 to 118.4 mg/di (3.6% reduction), while ethyl acetate fraction raised the concentration from 93 to 95.2 mg/dl (2.3% raise), and aqueous fraction from 77.8 to 100 mg/dl (22.2% raise). In alloxaninduced diabetic mice, ethanol-insoluble aqueous extract fraction showed better glucose tolerance compared to control. And in this group, the fraction (0.7 gfkg body weight) reduced blood glucose concentration (15.07%) but less potent than insulin (97.59%). In adrenaline-treated mice, the fraction also depressed blood glucose concentration (raised from 130.76 to 135.48 mg/dl), significantly different from control (raised from 142.23 to 288.2 mg/dl). An in vitro test data showed that the fraction was supposed to enhance glucose transport to the heart. <br /> text |
