Description
Summary:This concert hall in Surabaya is a collaboration project between Surabaya Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and Bukit Darmo Property. This concert hall will be built in order to increase people’s awareness and love toward classical music in Surabaya. In a 13.000 square metre area owned by Bukit Darmo Property, the concert hall is going to be established with the spirit of Surabaya landmark. Some issues that are used to design this building are circulation and flexibility, audial and visual comfort, commerciality, value and image (Surabaya landmark). From these four issues, the last one is the one that has interpretation most towards the massing and building facade concept. Meanwhile the other three are applied to the interior and the landscape of the concert hall. The concept of this concert hall is the dinamycs of music that being applied in design. It is shown in a the form of the concert hall itself that has many curves and also playing with the levels. The addition of the facade answering the value and image issue, makes this concert hall looks contextual with the surrounding yet still has its own uniqueness that make it easier to attract people and make them remember. For the landscape itself, the permeability concept is used to connect many commercial icons that located around the site. Design approach that is used for this project is function follows form, where the form is decided first then it’s compared to the spatial program. At some point the form isn’t match to the spatial program so the form needs to change a bit and finally the current form of the concert hall is ready. The specialty of this concert hall is its dynamic form, stand out but still contextual, and meets the requirement for its audial and visual comfort. Site permeability and pilotic concept also adds the value and characteristic more to the design of this concert hall.
