Description
Summary:Indonesia has the second largest biodiversity in the world. There are about 30,000 kinds of plants that 2,500 of them are considered as medicinal plants. But their efficacy had not been proven preclinically or clinically, e.g. tree tomato (Solanum betaceum Cav.). Tree tomato is used traditionally to treat sore throat, tonsil inflammation, and to keep liver healthy. This study was aimed to examine the antiinflammatory and analgesic activity of concentrated juice of tree tomato, and to determine its optimum dosage. The anti-inflammatory activity was examined by paw edema method to 5 groups of rats, i.e. concentrated juice dosed 0.591, 1.1825, 2.365 g/kg BW, the comparative drug Na-diclofenac 5 mg/kg BW, and positive control (CMC-Na 1%). One percent of ?-carrageenan was used to induced paw oedema. The percentage of oedema formation and oedema inhibition was calculated. The analgesic activity was examined by writhing test method to 5 groups of mice, i.e. concentrated juice dosed 0.846, 1.692, 3.384 g/kg BW, the comparative drug mefenamic acid 65 mg/kg BW, and positive control (CMC- Na 1%). The pain was induced by administrating 1% acetic acid 10 ml/kg BW of mice intraperitoneally. The writhing was observed and counted for 1 hour after induction. The percentage of oedema formation of the dose 0.591 g/kg BW was significantly different compared to positive control group 2 hours after induction. The percentage of oedema inhibition of the dose 0.591 and 1.1825 g/kg BW was not significantly different compared to mefenamic acid. The cumulative number of writhing of concentrated juice dose 0.846, 1.692, 3.384 g/kg BB was 89.75, 109.25, and 112 respectively. The dose 0.846 g/kg BW was significantly different to positive control group (p<0.05). Therefore, it could be concluded that the concentrated juice of tree tomato had anti-inflammatory activity with optimum dose 0.591 g/kg BW of rat and analgesic activity with optimum dose 0.846 g/kg BW of mice.
