DESIGN OF WATERFRONT AREA AS URBAN PUBLIC SPACE CENTER CASE STUDY: SIANTAN MARKET AREA AT PONTIANAK CITY
description The Siantan Market area is one of the strategic areas of the city that helped shape Pontianak's identity as a Waterfront City. This strategic value can be seen from its position in the center of the city, its main function as one of the city's trade and service areas and the direction of the development of the area as a City Service Center. The planned construction of a crossing bridge for vehicles and pedestrians that will replace the ferry crossing function is also an essential factor that will significantly affect the development of the area around the Siantan Market. The expected role for this area has not been realized due to the condition of the facilities in the area which cannot accommodate social and cultural activities of the urban community as well as the physical condition of the area, which is outdated, dirty and tends to be neglected. The potential of the water element at this area, which is on the banks of the Kapuas River, has also not been utilized optimally for the benefit of the urban community. This gives a negative image to the area and the identity of Pontianak City. On the other hand, the development of public open spaces in Pontianak has shown a good tendency with the creation of several parks and public open spaces. In other parts of the Kapuas River banks in the city area, promenade facilities have also been developed as a public waterfront recreation area. From the social and cultural aspects, there is a great potential created by the cultural diversity of city communities, which consist of several ethnicities and ethnic groups. Every year routinely held various events that reflect the richness of local arts and culture. These factors are a great potential to be accommodated in the development and design of the Siantan Market Area, which is more oriented to the interests of the urban community. Based on this background, an action is needed in the form of area development and design plan so that the purpose of this thesis is to design a waterfront area in the Pontianak City Siantan Market Area as the center of the city's public space. The method used in the preparation of the thesis uses a fragmental process consisting of collecting data and reviewing existing conditions, identifying and limiting analysis, formulating goals and objectives, formulating design concepts and finally developing designs in the form of simulations. The thesis study is based on theories and precedents that discuss the substance of waterfront areas and urban public spaces. These studies conclude that the waterfront design principles that pay attention to elements of the theme, image, authenticity, function and natural environment of the area are still very relevant to use. This study of waterfront areas must also be elaborated with a study of public spaces, which in essence, must pay attention to the principles of designing a responsive, democratic and meaningful public space. The analysis shows that it is necessary to design an area that can create new activities and facilities in the Siantan Market Area. The main principles of the design of the Pasar Siantan area briefly include integrating spatial functions, forming the waterfront face of the area, integrating the characteristics of activities and facilities, providing varied types of facilities and optimizing the potential of natural elements of the site. The development of the area is carried out by urban renewal that carries the concept of "New Vibrant Urban Riverfront". The design concept includes the creation of lively public spaces, beautiful and healthy environment, social and economic sustainability and strongly accessible. The design components that are important for realizing these concepts include land use and facility functions, architecture and landscaping, waterfronts, public spaces and access and connections. Land use and facility functions are designed by prioritizing public space facilities for community recreational activities. Architecture and landscape are designed with a blend of modern and local elements to create a unique character. The waterfront is designed with facilities that can increase user interaction with the water element. Public spaces are designed by creating open spaces that can accommodate diverse user activities. Access and connections are designed by smoothing circulation currents around the area and increasing and facilitating access within the area. The simulation results show that the design of an area that is close to the element of water in the city has the potential to create spaces that can attract public activities and create a strong city identity.
