THE MEANING AND VALUE OF SIRI’ CULTURE ON “UANG PANAI’=MAHA(L)R” MOVIE (SEMIOTICS ANALYSIS)

Movie as media to deliver a message of connected thoughts to the viewers. Value of life, norm, lifestyle, and developed social life system applied on society are presented on movie. Reality, dream and hope become part of contemplation and thought of every received message by the viewers. So, movie has power to define cultural values, which believed or not, will influence mindset and bring up hegemony and ideology on social life. Study on movie requires searching, beheading and forming a story line. Even if discussing about fact and history, there is a consequence value for every spared interpretation and be able to evolve from every served message. Uang Panai’=Maha(l)r movie is a Makassar local movie, directed by Asril Sani and Halim Gani Safia, produced by Andi Syahwal Mattuju and Amril Nuryan. Bandaged with drama-comedy, this movie lifts up a unique problematics on Bugis-Makassar culture, which is uang panai’ that has siri’ culture. The presented reality on Uang Panai’=Maha(l)r is a representation value of siri’ value held by Bugis ethnic society. While on movie, the contained cultural values run into a designated dynamics of shifting values of siri’. The research performed uses semiotics analysis, which systematically and clearly describes the meaning and value of Uang Panai'=Maha(l)r. The area aspect of research is performed structurally by analyzing the visual elements, the message and meaning of it, and also the representation and value contained. It is based on the thought to understand the object dimension based on the Uang Panai'=Maha(l)r movie interpretation. The result shows that the enormous amount of Uang Panai' determined by the Bugis bride's family is one form of Siri' culture values deviation. Siri' values are showed explicitly directly spoken by the actors of the Uang Panai' Movie. Those dialogues underline the points that Bugis society held and still adheres the Siri’ culture values despite of deviation of its values.
