The volcanic eruption was considered the second-worst disaster in Indonesia after the tsunami, due to its severe environmental and material damage which also possibly causing a high number of death tolls. Mount Merapi National Park Jurang Jero, located in Ngargomulyo Village, Magelang Regency, Central Java, was one of the areas that represented the post-eruption of Mount Merapi since the latest occurrence back in 2010. This area is classified as Disaster-Prone Areas III with moderate damage. The damage occurred in the form of forest fires, which destroyed some endemic vegetation, damaged road infrastructure, and triggered flash floods in the form of cold lava that crossed rivers in the area. Balai Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi (TNGM) has divided the national park area into several zones. Jurang Jero is an area within TNGM that enters the zone designated as tourism development. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to design a geo-tourism area in a disaster-prone zone by implementing mitigation strategy in the tourist area that can later educate visitors about the dangers of volcanoes, study the nature and environment around volcanoes, and the local culture associated with the tourist area. The method used is by assessing the potential area that can be developed as a tourism spot, learning zone, and recreation area. The designed area covers approximately ± 106.4 Ha as a tourism development zone and also a traditional area that is commonly used by local people to produce forest products. The development of mitigation-based geo-tourism is expected to provide insight into the wider community about the impact of eruptions and overcoming environmental recovery. text
