Description
Summary:The Special Region of Yogyakarta (henceforth called as Yogyakarta) is known as the city of arts and culture. Craft is the city’s identity and becomes an inseparable part of the people’s daily life. Society members of Yogyakarta do not only consider craft to be correlated to them culturally and art-ly but also economically. However, they have not understood craft in a comprehensive way yet. In this study the term craft is used to refer to the concept of the Indonesian terminology ‘kriya seni’ that denotes the crafts with high artistic values. Based in the historical aspect, craft is attached different meaning from kerajinan tangan (best translated into handicraft) that commonly known by people in European and American countries and even Asian ones as craft or handicraft that can be used interchangeably. In this context, handicraft is defined as an object produced to fulfil human’s daily needs without carefully planning. Craft on the contrary, is characterized by its high quality. It is because ‘craft’ was created to fulfil the needs of a kingdom or the royal family members so that along with the kingdom history, the activity of craft producing became a great tradition (Adiluhung). Until today, craft has been accepted as a flexible and open concept. The openness provides craft practitioners and the field with an opportunity to continuously develop in responding the situation, understanding the phenomena happen in their surroundings, and exhibiting their personal expressions. This concept leads craft expansion to happen. In this research, craft expansion studied was the one occurred in public spaces in Yogyakarta. The research aimed to find out the causal factors the expansion of craft in Yogyakarta, internally and externally. Second, it was also done to find out how the expansion contributed to the forming of scientific concept of craft today and the future and as a reference for public spatial planning in Yogyakarta. The research procedures covered for stages, namely observation, identification, documentation and investigation. The observation was conducted in various places ranging from shopping centers, public facilities, and cultural centers. The studied objects were the ones created from 2000 until 2017.This investigation was a cultural study organized in an interdisciplinary method. To explain craft dimension or the visual aspects of the public space in Yogyakarta, the aesthetics theory, craft theory, and expansion theory were applied. Public space theory and sociology of art theory supported those three theories. The sociology of art was used to inspect the contextual aspect of the observed public space art with craft dimensions. The needed data were gathered by means of literature study, interviewing the source persons consisted of local people as well as visitors, and local leaders, distributing questionnaires, documenting the craft works and maximally utilizing the supporting data to get valid data. The result of the research was the discovery of new concepts or terminologies coined because of the craft expansion in public spaces in Yogyakarta. The phenomenon gave new dimension to the scientific aspect of craft domain. Conceptually, craft expansion could be abstracted as the existence of disembodiment, exteriorization, durability, and ornament enlargement. The process also brought out monumental elements that had not existed before the expansion.
