In 1987 the dock activity in Donggala is relocated to the new pier, Pantoloan harbor in Palu City. Since then the historic port and the old town Donggala continued to desolate and the trading activity has declined. On the other hand, tourism impulse in Donggala Old Town has arisen. Donggala inherits the potential for tourism in nature, history and culture. The government thus assigned Donggala as Tourism City and pronounced the tourism sector as the focus of the development plan. The government’s adjudication to elect Donggala Old Town as one of the tourism destination is an endeavor to give meaning to the place as well as to foster the economy growth for the residents. In prospect to this potential, a design for the new function is vital to support the activity, as well as to connect the bridge between the futuristic vision of Donggala as tourism city and its historical importance as once port town. The elected site location is the old port of Donggala, which holds a representative historical value when Donggala was a port town in the former times. Placemaking principles will be utilized to enhance the sense of place of the location. Placemaking is a process to transform a “space” into “place”. The role of Visitor Center is expected to be a welcoming gate and tourist activity center, as well as the role of “melting pot” to adjoin; 1) Function that will become an attraction point and provide helpful facilities for tourist, 2) Notable background, history and location potential, 3) Needs and interests from existing local community and inhabitants. The objective of this approach are to reestablish Donggala port as a landmark and reintroduce neighboring activity to encourage local economy enterprise. text |
