This certainly makes the author have a lot of experience and understanding related to the phenomenon of this mental disorders that are still too ruled out, not considered as serious and misunderstood. The most obvious problem is the lack of awareness as from emotional, rational aspect and very slow countermeasure because of obsolete approach from experts and governments that are obliged to deal with it. Social stigma towards psychiatric disorders is tend to be considered as consequence of individuals weak mental fortitude, is a form of karma, and after all the symptoms they show are always below other physical ailments. This makes the empathy canal closed and complicates the steps of sympathy going forward. Visual art in Indonesia itself hasn’t really open the channel of empathy to the public. Regardless of its function which is believed to be a remedy for mankind soul or psyche. The fact is that the majority of works of art are catharsis of the artist after successfully overcome their mental ordeals or the manifestation on how artist cope with the problem is not what is actually would give audience the opportunity to empathize with the struggle and the problem of mental disorder. One of the fundamentals in give somekind comfort for someone with mental disorders are the feelings to be accompanied and reassured that the patient is not alone is the key that can only begin with an empathy channel provided to understand this. Other factor is that existence of brut art or outsider art as a term for their works made individuals with psychiatric disorders gets the impression of it as a form to alienating them. Moving from these conclusions, the author will present manifestations of psychiatric symptoms that are less ‘interesting’ (rather than hallucinations and hysteria), it called the self harm, which often misunderstood as an actions to seek attention and are seen as repulsive things to do. It’s presented in the form of performance art to give the sensation of experience of with high intensity and three-dimensional elements as supporting objects with relevant symbolic content on it. This is expected to bring art to truly provide a channel of empathy and sympathy for the of mental disorders problems that are so precarious and need to be dealt with immediately text |
