Description
Summary:Abstract :

The ability of last instar Spodoptera exempta larvae to self-select on artificial diet has been investigated. The modification of artificial defined diet indicated that nutritionally an 50%:50% casein:sucrose ratio were suitable. Further evaluation showed that the larvae had undergone self-select an 80%:20% casein:sucrose ratio when offered two diets that are identical and complete except that one lacks casein and the other lacks sucrose.. The 80%:20% ratio supports the best of overall weight gain, instar duration, Growth Rate (GR), Consumption Rate (CR), Efficiency Conversion of Digested food (ECD), Efficiency Conversion of Ingested food (ECI) and Approximate Digestibility (AD). This ratio was nutritionally optimal as compared with those of 50%:50% and 20%:80% casein:sucrose ratios respectively. When larvae were provided with natural diets, the feeding on mustard green (Brassica juncea) result in value of better nutrition indices than that on the scallion (Allium fistulosum).
