Description
Summary:The black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) is a member of the insect class cultivated due to its ability to convert various kinds of organic waste into bodily biomass that can be utilized as a source of protein and fat for various applications. In this process however, one inhibiting factor affecting sustainabilty of cultivation is egg production; which in turn is determined by the mating process of these insects. The aim of this research is to (1) predict the sex of the BSF pupae and (2) determine the sex ratio that produces the most eggs. In this research, the sex of the BSF pupae is predicted by looking at the mass and length of the pupae, while the sex ratios used to determine the optimal ratio is 50:50, 60:40, and 40:60 male-to-female. A probabilistic model, namely logistic regression, is used to predict sex, while the number of eggs is estimated by the aggregate mass of eggs. It is known from this research that mass is the better predictor (p-value<0.001) compared to length (p-value 0.053), while the male-tofemale ratio that produced the most eggs is 40:60.
