For more than a year, Indonesia has always been the highest producer of palm oil in the world. The high number of palm oil production in Indonesia, also followed by the high number of palm oil exports, makes the downstream processing of palm oil becomes very important. The highest unsaturated fatty acid composition contained in palm oil is oleic acid. Branching of the alkene functional group of oleic acid derivatives, will significantly change the physical properties of these compounds, so that they can be used as additives for lubricants, renewable fuels, and renewable surfactant precursors. In this study, an aromatic electrophilic substitution reaction was carried out on methyl oleate and oleyl alcohol as an oleic acid derivatives, using toluene as an aromatic group, and using catalyst variations such as sodium persulfate, ammonium persulfate, a mixture of iron powder and bromine, and triflic acid. The resulting reaction product (4) is a compound resulting from oleyl alcohol (1) that is branched with toluene (2) using triflic acid catalyst (3). Each reaction product, also refined using the gravity column chromatography method and characterized using the NMR spectroscopy method. text |
