Summary: | Cyclotella striata is a type of diatom that produces fukosantin biopigment. Fucoxanthin is a santophil compound which has antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of fucoxanthin C. striata TBI. The research steps include cultivation of C. striata TBI strains inside and outside the room, harvesting by electroplotation, isolation and purification of C. striata fucoxanthin, characterization of fucoxanthin with TLC, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and FTIR , and test for antioxidant activity. Productivity of wet C. striata TBI strains planted with an initial density of 3.8 × 105 cells / mL is equal to 0.407 mg L-1 day -1. Fucoxanthin C. striata TBI were identified by TLC at an Rf value of 0.26. The maximum absorption of fucoxanthin is observed at a wavelength of 452 nm. Bond vibrations in fucoxanthin were detected at wave numbers 3427 (–OH), 2924 (–CH alkanes), 1928 (C = C = C), 1734 (–C = O ketones), 1656 (–C = C), 1460-1366 (–CH alkanes), and 1029 (–C – O
esters) cm – 1. The antioxidant activity of fucoxanthin obtained from C. striata TBI before purification is equal to 0.034. While fucoxanthin antioxidant activity has a higher value of
0.060. So that the antioxidant activity of fucoxanthin after purification has 1.76 times higher.
