This cell wall called frustule shows interesting properties compared to that of other materials due to high surface area, high thermal and pressure stability, biocompatibility, and easily chemical modification. The aim of this research was to characterize Phaeodactylum sp. PBI’s biosilica. The methods included indoor and outdoor cultivation in photobioreactor, biomass harvesting, isolation and infrared spectroscopy characterization of biosilica. The results showed that Phaeodactylum sp. PBI cells were greenish?brown, pennate in shape, and 13 – 24 ?m in length. Biomass yield of 0.164 g L–1 day– 1 and 0.076 g L–1 day–1 were observed for indoor and outdoor cultivation, respectively. After acid cleaning and baking of Phaeodactylum sp. PBI biomass, white solid powder biosilica of 14.38 mg g–1 biomass was obtained. The biosilica was identified by infrared spectroscopy at wavenumber of 450, 750 and 1105 cm–1 for its typical functional group. text
