The changes in the properties and microstructures prior and after full annealing, quenching and quenching followed by two-step tempering, were compared to determine the effect of the heat treatment processes. In tool steel of AISI D3 the phases that were formed through full annealing were pearlite and carbide, while through quenching martensite, retained austenite and carbides were observed. Quenching followed by two-step tempering in tool steel AISI D3 produced tempered martensite and carbide. In low alloy steel of AISI 4140, full annealing formed ferrite and pearlite, while through quenching martensite was formed. Quenching followed by two-step tempering produced tempered martensite. It was observed that hardness depends on the heat treatment processes and the content of alloying elements in each steels. The hardenability of AISI D3, as shown by Jominy Test, is better than AISI 4140. text |
