The absence of auricle, that has a function to catch soundwave, makes the sound cannot be transmitted to the tympanic membrane. People with normal hearing depend on air as a medium to transmit sound waves to their ear, called air conduction (AC) method. This method relies on outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear capability. Microtia patients that have an abnormal ear form cannot execute this long process as they miss the starting point. This has become the main factor of hearing problems for microtia patients. Because of this fact, a method called bone conduction (BC) is introduced. Bone conduction is a sound energy transmission method that uses skull bones to transfer the sound vibration into cochlea for creating sound perception By using this method, a system that can transmit sound energy for microtia patients, can be used as an alternative to help them in solving their hearing problems. There are many devices that implement this method, such as bone conduction headset and bone conduction hearing aid. The high risk and high cost needed to implement the existing systems, many microtia patients cannot receive a good treatment for their hearing problem. A system that can help microtia patients to solve their hearing problems with low budget and low risk is needed. The use of modified bone conduction headset can be an option as a hearing aid for microtia patients. Hopefully this system can help microtia patients in their daily life especially in hearing and social problems. text |
