However, since most of the RESs are intermittent, the use of an energy storage system (ESS) is important to compensate for the intermittency of RESs and supporting higher penetration of RESs. Other than its general use to compensate for the intermittency of RESs, the ESS could also be used for more specific uses, such as for peak shaving during peak load in the system. By utilizing ESS, the excess energy outside peak load could be charged to the ESS at lower costs, and then, the energy is used during peak load, in which the energy price is higher. Thus, the ESS could be a more environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional peakers, such as gas plants, while reducing the use of non-renewable energy sources. In this paper, the simultaneous use of the battery energy storage system (BESS) for both frequency regulation and peak shaving purposes in the South Sulawesi system is discussed. From the obtained results, BESS can properly perform both functions in the South Sulawesi system and thus, could be an alternative to the future installation of conventional peakers in the system. text |

Due to the growing concern on the long-term adequacy of non-renewable energy
sources, the utilization of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the power system
significantly increases. However, since most of the RESs are intermittent, the use
of an energy storage system (ESS) is important to compensate for the intermittency
of RESs and supporting higher penetration of RESs. Other than its general use to
compensate for the intermittency of RESs, the ESS could also be used for more
specific uses, such as for peak shaving during peak load in the system. By utilizing
ESS, the excess energy outside peak load could be charged to the ESS at lower
costs, and then, the energy is used during peak load, in which the energy price is
higher. Thus, the ESS could be a more environmentally-friendly alternative to
conventional peakers, such as gas plants, while reducing the use of non-renewable
energy sources. In this paper, the simultaneous use of the battery energy storage
system (BESS) for both frequency regulation and peak shaving purposes in the
South Sulawesi system is discussed. From the obtained results, BESS can properly
perform both functions in the South Sulawesi system and thus, could be an
alternative to the future installation of conventional peakers in the system.
