Summary: | Abstract:

Up to around 43,93% of urban families live in small and crowded houses. A group of people that lives in a crowded house usually suffers some sense of crowding. In most cases, if a person is subjected to sustained state of crowdedness, she or he may exhibit social pathologic behavior, such as criminal act, juvenile delinquency, etc.

Considering that there are sizeable portion of urban families live in crowded houses, one may expect that social pathologic behavior deriving from a sustained state of crowdedness is pervasive. An attempt is, therefore, made to elucidate the structure of interelating factors that leads to the creation of a state of crowdedness in a housing environment. Based on empirical observations made in various studies and certain theoretical arguments, a reasonably comprehensive interrelationship among those factors is described and expressed explicitly in the form of cause effect relation diagram, whereby not only feed-forward effects can be observed, but also direct and indirect feed-back effects.

From the constructed diagram three main routes were identified, whereby the conditions that generates a state of crowdedness can develop, denoted as privacy, tranquility and capacity routes. Possible ways of reducing the development of such conditions can therefore be undertaken by modifying the mechanisms in those three main routes. It should also be noted that, the diagram also indicates the existence of positive feedback loops, i.e loops that have amplifying effect. Furthermore, one can deduce by implication that the state of crowdedness itself can generate factors identified in the diagram that leads to the creation of such a state.

The most dominant factor that can alleviate the psychological state of crowdedness is level of income. Therefore the key to overcoming the problem of crowdedness is to undertake initiatives to stimulate and facilitate income generating activities that can result in improving the level of income of the families in such crowded housing environment.

Considering the negative impacts and the consequent high social cost that a state of crowdedness in a small housing environment can have, it is recommended that the government should review, re-evaluate, and reconsider the continuity of its small housing development program. |
