The eradication of B. dorsalis fruit flies can be done by using volatile compounds as attractants. Recent study reported that ocimene is one of the volatile compounds in chili fruits. This study aims to assess the response of fruit flies to ocimene. 1664 B. dorsalis were collected from chilies invested fruits (separated based on age, females and males, and feeding status) subject to laboratory experiment. Experiments were conducted in Y-tube olfactometer at laboratory condition. In each experiment 13 individuals were released and 40 ?l of 100 ppm ocimene (in Whatman paper) was set at the other side of the tube. Each observation was conducted for 15 minutes, fruit fly behavior and its orientation were recorded. The experiment was conducted in factorial randomized block design with 4 replications. The respond was observed for different age of fruit fly (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 days) and feeding status (full and hungry). The results showed that the average response of B. dorsalis male and female to ocimene compounds differed significantly, B. dorsalis females are more attracted to ocimene (22 fruit flies), males (8 fruit flies) and the rest was no respond. Based on the age, the young females (1,3,5,7 days) respond higher than the older (9, 11, 13, 15 days) however based on feeding status, there is no significant difference between starved fruit flies attracted to ocimene and fed fruit flies attracted to ocimene. text
