GEOLOGY AND COAL ANALYSIS IN SEKATAK BENGARA AREA, SEKATAK DISTRICTS, BULUNGAN REGENCY, NORTH KALIMANTAN PROVINCE

Geological mapping on a scale of 1:25.000 was held in Sekatak Bengara area, Sekatak Districts, Bulungan Regency, North Kalimantan Province in an area of 56 km2. The research’s purpose is to determine the geological setting and find out the assemblage and quality of coal deposits in the research a...

The research’s purpose is to determine the geological setting and find out the assemblage and quality of coal deposits in the research area. Primary data used in this research obtained from field observation and field data collection in the form of outcrop data. There are also core data and coal quality data that are used as secondary data. The research area was divided into three geomorphological units which are Bengara Tuff Hill Unit, Denudational Plain Unit, and Sekatak Flood Plain Unit. The stratigraphy of research area divided into four unofficial units from oldest to youngest: Limestone Unit and Sandstone Unit that deposited on Late Miocene, Tuff Unit (Pliocene – Pleistocene) that deposited unconformably above them. Alluvial Unit (Recent) deposited unconformably above the other rock units. Geological structures developed in the research area are syncline fold, normal fault, and strike-slip fault. Coal analysis in this research is in the form of secondary data from PT. Perkasa Energy, including proximate analysis, calorific value, and total sulphur analysis. Based on the general analysis, coal deposit in the research area has lignite rank quality. Based on ash content, coal deposit in the research area is classified as good to very good quality coal. While based on total sulphur, the coal deposit is classified as medium sulphur coal to high sulphur coal. Distribution of coal in the research area was analyzed based on core data and outcrop data. In the research area, there are eight coal seams whose distribution is influenced by the geological structure. Consists of two continuous seams (Seam A and Seam B) and Seam C that is not exposed in surface area. text
